Story with Flixster App
As a person who loves movies, I often communicate and share with friends who also love movies. In these exchanges, Flixster App was frequently mentioned as our main tool for obtaining movie information and reviews. However, we've all encountered some frustrating experiences, such as difficulty navigating and finding movie details. This feedback inspired me to improve the Flixster App with the goal of improving the overall user experience and making it the platform of choice for every movie lover.
In the Flixster App project, I worked on redesigning a user experience that was mobile-first and content-first at its core, allowing users to easily view movie information and ratings. My design process was centered around providing a simple, intuitive and feature-rich platform for movie lovers, emphasizing accessibility of content and optimizing the user experience on mobile.
Facing Challenges
The early stages of the project taught me the importance of a deep understanding of user needs and expectations. When designing the survey, I faced a huge challenge: how to craft the questions to elicit meaningful feedback while avoiding user fatigue or confusion. I clearly realize that the success or failure of this step is directly related to the effect of the subsequent design plan.
To address these challenges and further implement mobile-first and content-first design concepts, I adopted a diverse strategy. Not only did I delve into the relevant literature and success stories to learn best practices, I also actively sought advice from my mentors and learned from their experiences. More importantly, I always start from the user's perspective and simplify the question settings as much as possible to ensure that the questions are easy to understand and arouse the user's interest. Through a series of iterative revisions and optimizations, I finally completed a questionnaire that mined deep user insights.
Through this process, I deeply understood the importance of remaining flexible, asking for help, and learning from the experiences of others when facing challenges. This experience not only deepened my emphasis on user research, but also made me understand the importance of deeply understanding user needs during the design process, which is crucial to creating products that meet user expectations.
Mobile-First and Content-First Design
The final design outcome is based on careful study of user feedback and continuous improvement. Through in-depth analysis of competitors, I gained insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the market, thereby guiding my design to be more superior in functionality and interface. User surveys and website usability testing help me gain a deep understanding of users’ needs and pain points, allowing me to provide more thoughtful and effective design solutions.
If I had more time, I would further deepen user research, especially through more face-to-face interviews and field observations, to obtain richer user behavior data and psychological feelings. I also hope to explore more innovative design solutions, especially the application of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology in movie recommendation and preview, to provide users with a more immersive and interactive experience.
In addition, I also plan to conduct more extensive usability testing, including users of different ages and backgrounds, to ensure that my design meets the needs of a wider group of users.
Finally, I hope to have the opportunity to work with more industry experts and designers to further enhance the innovation and practicality of my design solutions through their feedback and suggestions.
